Inositol is a nutrient that naturally occurs and is found in several forms, with myo-inositol being the most frequent. Inositol is seen in phospholipids, which work as cellular mediators in regulation of metabolism, and growth.

Inositol is seen in large amounts in the brain where it promotes communication between multiple millions of brain cells. The major neurotransmitters which are serotonin, dopamine, GABA, norepinephrine and acetylcholine, depend on inositol for the conveyance of messages. These neurotransmitters have major impacts on the productivity, ability to control stress, mood, ability to learn, cravings, etc. of a person. And because it is among several brain chemical systems, Inositol is a natural supplement which is very effective in the treatment of a wide array of mental health conditions.

There are anti-anxiety medications, but they are not effective for everybody and their side effects are intolerable for many users. One natural anti-anxiety remedy is inositol, and there is evidence that it is useful for many types of anxiety, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Inositol may also be quite helpful in the treatment of depression. Nowadays, depression is the most frequent mental disorder, and women are twice more affected than men. In people who have depression, levels of inositol are lower than average. But while the treatment of depression using inositol appears to be logical, there is still mixed evidence for inositol as a natural remedy for depression.
